Finnish innovation wins this year’s Nordic Innovation Award

Published 22-05-2026

The Nordic Innovation Award was presented for the second time this year – this time in Oslo on 21 May 2026. The Finnish deep-tech company Weeefiner Oy took home the award and the honour.

Weeefiner Oy is a Finnish deep-tech company that has developed the groundbreaking 4D Scavenger® technology, enabling the recovery of valuable metals and nutrients from industrial wastewater. Instead of losing these materials during water treatment, companies can recover them and reuse them in production or sell them as raw materials. In this way, Weeefiner transforms waste into a resource and helps companies both reduce environmental impact and strengthen their business.

Weeefiner Oy was awarded the Nordic Innovation Award 2026 among five finalists from across the Nordic countries.

The Nordic jury highlighted that Weeefiner’s technology combines resource efficiency and environmental protection while also delivering measurable business benefits. The solution has demonstrated its potential in practice, opens up new revenue streams, and contributes to significant environmental improvements. Moreover, the company has shown a strong focus on the protection of intellectual property rights, which ultimately led to the jury’s unanimous decision to name Weeefiner Oy the winner of the Nordic Innovation Award 2026.

The Danish finalist, Sonus Fishery, with co-founder and CTO Jan Muller, reached the final as Denmark’s representative in the Nordic Innovation Award. The company was nominated for its patented, sound-based solution, which has the potential to make trawl fishing more environmentally sustainable.

The Danish jury highlighted Sonus Fishery’s breakthrough acoustic technology, which uses sound to guide fish movement and reduce bycatch. The sound generated by the invention creates a “virtual net”, extending the effective range of the trawl while simultaneously reducing the need for physical contact between the seabed and fishing gear.

About the Nordic Innovation Award

The Nordic Innovation Award celebrates and incentivises companies in their continued efforts to develop and protect innovation in the Nordic region and globally. The award recognises entrepreneurs and small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) that not only think innovatively but also protect their ideas through intellectual property rights such as patents, trademarks, and designs – contributing to a more sustainable future.

The Nordic Innovation Award is developed in collaboration between the intellectual property offices of Denmark, Finland, Iceland, Norway, and Sweden. Each national jury nominates one finalist based on the submitted applications. The five finalists then advance to a Nordic jury, which selects the overall winner of the Nordic Innovation Award.

The Nordic Innovation Award 2026 was presented at a ceremony in Oslo. Next year’s award ceremony will take place in Finland.
